Preventing Abuse of Pain Killers

In preventing abuse of pain killers and possible addiction, patients, pharmacists and doctors can all help in prevention.

Role of Patients -  What You Can Do

There are several ways that patients can prevent pain killer or other prescription drug abuse.

  • When visiting your doctor, provide a complete medical history and a description of the reason for your visit to ensure that the doctor understands your complaint and can prescribe the right medication for you.
  • If a doctor prescribes pain killers or other medicine for you, follow the directions for use carefully and learn about the effects, side effects and adverse reactions that the drug could have, especially during the first few days during which your body is adjusting to the medication.
  • Be aware of potential interactions with other drugs including alcohol.
  • Do not increase or decrease the doses or abruptly stop taking any drug without consulting a doctor or health care provider first, in the event you need to taper down.
  • Common sense tells you to never use another person's prescription for a number of reasons.

Role Of Pharmacists in Preventing Pain Killer Abuse

Pharmacists play a role in preventing pain killer and other prescription drug misuse and abuse by:

  • Explaining how to take a medication properly.
  • Providing clear information about the side effects the medication may have.
  • Providing advice about any possible drug interactions - adverse reactions.
  • Giving the patient a copy of the drug insert for their reference.

They can also help prevent prescription fraud or diversion by looking for false or altered prescriptions.

Role of Doctors and Other Health Care Providers in Preventing Pain Killer Abuse

Health care providers are in a good position to prescribe needed medications appropriately, and also to:

  • Identify pain killer or other prescription drug abuse when it exists.
  • Help the patient recognize the problem and its symptoms.
  • Help set goals for recovery, and seek appropriate treatment for the patient when necessary.

Screening for any type of substance abuse can be incorporated into routine history-taking with questions about what prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs the patient is taking and why. Screening can be performed if a patient presents with specific symptoms associated with problem use of a drug or substance.

Over time, providers should note any dramatic increases in the amount of a drug needed - which may indicate the development of tolerance - or frequent requests for refills before the quantity prescribed should have been used up. They should also be alert to the fact that those addicted to prescription medications may engage in shopping doctors, moving from clinic to clinic in an effort to get multiple prescriptions for the pain killer or other drug they're abusing.

Preventing or stopping prescription pain killer drug abuse and possible pain killer addiction is an important part of patient care.  Doctors should not avoid prescribing pain killers or other drugs, if they are absolutely needed.
